ServGate Technologies plans on Tuesday to add web filtering capabilities to its security appliance, which already provides firewall, VPN, anti-virus and anti-spam capabilities.

The EdgeForce appliances run commercial firewall/VPN and e-mail security software from McAfee Security on a customized Linux operating system. ServGate plans on Monday to add SurfControl web filtering software to the appliance, to allow enterprises to control employee access to the web.

"What it allows a customer to do is regulate the use of the Internet within the company, blocking inappropriate web sites, regulating productivity and use of network resources," said Atchison Frazer, VP of marketing for ServGate.

Controlling employee web access is important as many web sites now carry spyware and other harmful code which employees might download to corporate systems, Frazer said.

ServGate is also bundling a contract with IBM Managed Security Services with the appliance. "Even with our protection, a company may experience a security incident so severe that it threatens to disrupt business and bring the company down," Frazer said. Frazer said. In those cases, IBM consultants will move in to try to help solve the problem.

The appliance is priced starting at $4,000 for a typical small business configuration, and is available in midrange and high-end configurations for distributed enterprises.
