SGI Monday added a mid-range model to its 64-bit Linux server line that can pack as many as 16 Intel Itanium 2 processors.

The new Altix 350 server, which can hold as many as 16 Itanium 2 processors -- users can assemble it in four-processor modules -- targets scientists, design engineers, researchers, and other technical customers, according to the Mountain View, Calif.-based computer maker.

Although pricing for the Altix 350 starts at $12,199, a four-processor unit costs $21,599 for a per-processor cost of $5,400. The server is available in a wide range of scalable configurations, said SGI.
