Sterling Commerce Inc. said Thursday it has acquired privately held TR2, a developer of data-cleansing and synchronization software, for an undisclosed sum. Sterling will incorporate TR2's products into its line of business-integration software for retail and consumer packaged-goods companies.

Data synchronization is increasingly critical for operating efficient supply chains and for complying with standardization efforts such as the UCCnet product registry. Sterling is a major player in the market for UCCnet software and services and lists Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Home Depot among its customers.

TR2 has some 400 customers, including L'Oreal, Black & Decker, and Ocean Spray. Sterling, a subsidiary of SBC Communications Inc., plans to retain all of TR2's employees and executives.
