Taiwanese vendor Elitegroup has shipped 300,000 LindowsOS-based units that have 128 MB of RAM, 20-GB hard drive and a 14-inch screen and are expected to cost less than $700.
A Taiwan laptop maker said Wednesday it is starting to sell Linux-based laptops in the U.S. that will cost less than $700.
Elitegroup Computer Systems said in a statement Wednesday that it has shipped about 300,000 of the laptops to U.S. resellers The laptops use the LindowsOS Laptop Edition and include built-in Wi-Fi.
The laptop, called the A535, is based on the AMD 1400+ processor, comes with 128 MB of RAM and weighs six pounds. It has a 14.1-inch LCD that supports 1024 x 768 resolution and hard drive options starting at 20 GB.
"For the first time, a powerful, mobile computer with built-in Wi-Fi at a sub-$700 price point is making a global reach," Wilson Lan, general manager of Elitegroup's mobile PC business unit said in a statement.
The laptop will be available through a handful of resellers, which are listed on Elitegroup's Web site.
Not surprisingly, Lindows.com hailed the announcement.
"This 300,000 deployment demonstrates that 2004 will be the year of the Linux laptop," Michael Robertson, Lindows.com CEO said in a statement. "The phenomenal product and phenomenal price-point is breaking open new markets for laptops."
