Symantec this week rolled out a new release of its next-generation storage resource management software, as part of the company's Storage United initiative to help businesses address their challenges with a unified, software-based approach.

The software includes Veritas CommandCentral Storage 5.0, Veritas CommandCentral Enterprise Reporter 5.0, and Veritas Process Automation Manager 5.0. All three make up an integrated family of products that are designed to automate storage processes and align storage with business goals, said Symantec.

CommandCentral Storage offers a view of how storage is allocated across different platforms in a data center. This helps businesses make better decisions about increasing their use of storage and helps distribute resources where they're needed. Businesses can increase storage utilization by up to 40%, Symantec said.

The software can be implemented in both physical and virtual environments. The latest 5.0 release of CommandCentral Storage supports storage systems like VMware, Hitachi Data Systems' TagmaStore, and IBM's SAN Volume Controller. Symantec claims the advanced support allows businesses to manage storage capacity at an application level in virtual environments, which wasn't possible in the past.

Release 5.0 also can support over 3,000 servers, 6 petabytes of storage capacity, and 12,000 switch ports with a single management server.

CommandCentral Enterprise Reporter offers a global overview of storage and has the ability to present information gathered from multiple data centers in a single view. The information can be organized by lines of business, geography, or other customized criteria.

With Process Automation Manager, businesses can implement consistent operational policies and automate storage management processes to ensure uptime and maintain service levels.

The Veritas CommandCentral 5.0 product family is licensed per server. CommandCentral Storage 5.0 and Process Automation Manager 5.0 are available immediately. CommandCentral Enterprise Reporter 5.0 will be available in the next two months.

Symantec in June launched a new initiative called Storage United, which is intended to create a simpler, better-integrated storage-management ecosystem. Symantec estimates that data volumes are doubling every two years, but industry-average storage utilization rates remain at between 30% and 35%. As a result, large amounts of duplicate data are filling up storage systems and IT departments are concerned with space limitations and power and cooling problems in their data centers.

Symantec hopes to help businesses solve these challenges with data protection, storage management, and archiving software that supports all major server and storage systems in data centers.
