In an effort to make it easier to develop, distribute, and deploy software used in virtual computing environments, VMware on Monday introduced the VMware Technology Network, which includes pre-built virtual machines from third-party software developers, a subscription option to VMware products, and access to a new Web site.

The VMware Technology Network is a "bundle of products that address the needs of software developers and testers that will make it easier for anyone to adopt a virtual infrastructure," says Srinivas Krishnamurti, group product manager for the company.

The network includes a collection of pre-built virtual machines from software developers such as Novell, Oracle, and Red Hat, Krishnamurti says. The program also provides a new way for the software providers to distribute their products, he adds.

VMware has developed a new Web site at www.vmtn.net that will provide technical resources to help developers and others share best practices and cooperate in the development and deployment of applications in virtual environments. Users can access peer-to-peer discussion forums, technical content, and find virtualization experts.

Users subscribing to VMTN will receive VMware Workstation 5, VMware GSX Server, VMware ESX Server with virtual SMP, and VMware P2V Assistant.

VMTN subscriptions can be downloaded on the Web site and are priced at $299 per user annually, beginning June 13.
